Does Acupuncture Hurt?
The needles I use are very fine and completely unlike those used for injections.
Sometimes a slight prick is felt when the needle is inserted. When the needle reaches the acupuncture point - about 4-5 mm below the surface of the skin - sometimes there is another sensation, often described as a dull ache or tingle. This means we are in touch with the life-force of the body. The instant you feel the sensation, it begins to wane.
You will be able to relax deeply beyond the needle sensations, to the point where you may even fall asleep. In fact, the vast majority of people say they don't feel the needles go in and remark how painless the whole experience was.
How do you make a diagnosis?
To make a diagnosis the acupuncturist needs a detailed understanding of the patient’s lifestyle, diet, work, medical history, emotional states etc.
This case history is taken during the first session which is consequently longer in duration than subsequent visits. From this a ‘picture’ of the person is built up which helps to tell Stephen where your health problem is located.
Stephen will also interpret your energy state from taking your pulses. Each of the body’s 12 major organs has a pulse associated with it upon the radial artery at the wrist which informs Stephen about the energy of that organ, and therefore you as a whole.
These signs, amongst others, form the basis of diagnosis.
